Representative Joe Harrison Appointed to Gulf Coast and Atlantic States Regional Task Force

16-Mar-2011

Harrison to represent Louisiana on 15-state council

Houma, LA - March 16, 2011 - Representative Joe Harrison,  District 51, is one of two elected officials to be appointed by Speaker of the House Jim Tucker to the Gulf Coast and Atlantic States Regional Task Force. The task force is an initiative of the Southern Legislative Conference and the Council for State Governments, and has been established to address multi-state concern over the federal government's capacity to respond immediately, effectively and efficiently during a disaster.

According to Harrison, "The 15 states of the SLC share a common concern over whether our states can rely on our federal government to effectively respond to both natural and man-made disasters. Our recent experiences in responding to the aftermath of storms and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill revealed significant gaps in the federal government's ability and preparedness to respond, especially during the critical first hours and days after an event. Through this special task force, we will be able to share best practices to ensure the safety and recovery of our states."
